When you live in a place that experiences harsh Winters, it’s important to winterize your electric golf cart to prevent costly damage and ensure a smooth ride come Spring.
When your electric golf cart is not properly protected from the elements, it can lead to any number of problems from cosmetic issues to lasting damage in your battery system. Fortunately, with a little preparation and maintenance, you can help extend the life of your golf cart while keeping it protected during the off-season.
Here are five tips to winterize your electric golf cart:
- Clean Your Cart: Take some time to give your golf cart a thorough cleaning before storing it. This will help wash away any dirt and grime that could cause damage from sitting on your cart’s exterior for an extended period.
- Charge Your Battery: Letting your battery drain completely can cause severe damage to it and result in it not being able to charge fully or even hold a charge at all. However, storing your battery fully charged can also cause irreparable damage. To avoid over-discharging and over-charging your battery, we recommend keeping your battery 50-60% charged when storing it for an extended period of time. Cold temperatures are known to slowly drain batteries, so if you are able to, we recommend unplugging your battery and storing it at room temperature.
- Check Your Tire Pressure: Colder temperatures can also impact tire pressure during the Winter and can cause your tires to deflate over time. Before storing your golf cart, inflate your tires to your cart’s recommended psi and be sure to check on your tire pressure periodically to ensure its pressure stays at the optimal psi. If your tire pressure is below its recommended psi for an extended period of time, it can cause damage to your rims and other aspects of your vehicle.
- Store In A Dry Area: If you are able, store your cart inside a shed, garage or storage unit to help protect it from the elements. If you have to store your cart outside, we recommend storing the battery indoors, keeping your cart slightly elevated to prevent moisture damage and using a weather-resistant tarp to cover your golf cart.
- Check In: Check on your electric golf cart periodically to ensure it’s still being stored in the most optimal conditions. This can include checking the storage space for any water leaks, checking and topping off your tire pressure and making sure your cart’s battery remains charged at 50-60%.
